Change Drive Letter in Windows 10, 11

In this article you will find out:

  • how to change Drive Letter in Windows 10, 11
  • how to protect your data

Are you ready? Let's read!

When you connect a removable device or an internal hard drive, Windows 10, 11 automatically detects and assigns a drive letter for its further use. When you reconnect the USB storage or SD, micro SD cards, the system may assign a different letter.

If you don't want to see the same drive letter, you can manually assign a constant drive letter to any drive connected to your computer. There are several ways to do this in Windows 10, 11: using the Disk Management app, the Prompt command, or PowerShell.

After that, Windows 10, 11 will not assign a new letter on its own, and you will be able to choose a drive letter that is more understandable for you.

How to Do it with Disk Management Tool

To assign a drive letter using Disk Management, follow these steps:

Open Start, in the search bar enter "Create and format hard disk partitions" and click the very first result. This will take you to the Disk Management dialog box. Here, right-click the drive and select the Change Drive Letter and Path option. Next, click the Change button and select the Assign the Next Drive Letter option. Now assign a new drive letter and click OK.

Note: To prevent the system from trying to assign the same letter to another drive, add letters in reverse order, that is, instead of using D, E, it is better to start with Z, Y.

The drive will now retain the assigned drive letter forever, even after reconnecting.

Use Command Prompt

To assign a drive letter using the command line, do the following:

Open Start, type Command Prompt in the search box, right-click the result, and select the Run as administrator option.

To launch DiskPart, type diskpart and press Enter:

Next, enter the following command to list all available volumes:

list volume, press Enter.

To select a volume (disk) to assign a new letter, enter:

select volume 2, press Enter.

Note: Change the number 2 to the number that represents the drive on your device.

To assign a new drive letter:

assign letter = D, press Enter.

Now, every time you reconnect the storage to the same device, the system will automatically assign the same letter.

Or Even PowerShell

To assign a drive letter using PowerShell, follow these steps:

Open Start, search PowerShell and right-click the result you want and select Run as Administrator.

Enter the following commands, and press Enter after each command:

Get-Disk

Get-Partition -DiskNumber 2 | Set-Partition -NewDriveLetter D

Note: Don't forget to change "2" and change "D" to the new letter you want to use.

The drive will be accessible through Explorer using the drive letter you assigned. Windows 10, 11 won't try to change it automatically.
