In this article you will find out:

  • how to deal with this issue
  • how to protect your data

Are you ready? Let's read!

What Is Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host?

The Windows Search Protocol Host is the process that oversees your search requests. If the SearchProtocolHost.exe utility is not functioning, you won’t be able to see any result when you search for files on your Windows PC. This utility runs in the background, and it can consume a lot of power; thus, if you’re trying to fix Search Protocol Host high CPU usage issues, below are some handy tips you need to know.

How To Fix Searchprotocolhost.exe Issues

1. Review the Indexing Settings

First things first, you need to change the Indexing Options. Here is how to do that:

1. Click on the Search Icon and type indexing options

2. Select “Indexing Options” from the search results

3. Click the Modify button

4. In the Indexed Locations box/tab, click on “Show all locations,” and uncheck directories that have massive files saved in them - probably your Local Disk C

5. Save changes and reboot your PC.

2. Use The SFC Utility

Actually, Windows OS integrates various built-in tools, which can help to troubleshoot and fix many problems you may experience with the OS. In this case, launch Command Prompt (Admin) and run the SFC command.

1. Right-click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin)

2. Run the following command: DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup-image/Restorehealth

3. Subsequently, run: SFC/ Scannow

4. Reboot your PC after the scan completes

3. Turn Off The Search Service

If at this point, the issue is not fixed, meaning that the Windows Search Protocol Host still continues to consume high CPU resources, maybe you should consider turning it off.

1.Press Windows key + R and run services.msc

2. Look for “Windows Search,” right-click and select Properties

3. Under “Startup,” set it to “Disabled,” then click the “Stop” button under “Service Status”

Click OK and restart your PC.

Need To Roll Back OS Update? Make Sure Your Data Is Safe

Most Windows OS problems can be fixed by rolling back an OS update. That is to say, if you did an upgrade recently before the high CPU usage issue started occurring, then it is advisable to roll back to an older version of your OS as that may fix the problem. But before you perform such an advanced action, you need to back up your files because you may lose them during the roll-back process.

To backup your files in a professional manner, you need a tool like the DiskInternals Partition Recovery software. This software tool is pretty advanced and supports all known Windows File System formats. It acts as a data backup software and also a data recovery software. Literally, this is a 2-in-one app for Windows PC users.

The following steps will guide you to protecting your data with DiskInternals Partition Recovery software:

  • Install the app and launch it
  • Close the wizard that would launch automatically and select the drive you want to back up
  • Right-click on the drive you want to back up and select “Create Image”
  • Choose another (external) drive where the image (backup) file would be saved, and click OK.
