Find and Change iTunes Backup Location on Windows 10

Here you will find out:

  • about this issue
  • how DiskInternals Partition Recovery can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

Regular iPhone or iPad backups with iTunes on Windows 10 is a great habit until you find out that the backup is taking up a lot of disk space. This will be especially noticeable if you are using a small SSD to boot Windows 10.

However, there is a way out: you can change the location of the iTunes backup to another partition or external drive. If you do not know how to do this, you have come to the right page, here it will be described in detail how to change iPhone backup location in Windows.

Where to find backup location?

Finding an iTunes backup location on Windows 10 is easy because iTunes on Windows uses the same backup storage for the desktop version and the Microsoft Store version.

If you don't know which iTunes is installed on your PC, do the following:

Open the Run window and enter the following path: C:\Users\USERNAME\Apple\MobileSync and press Enter. If you see File Explorer on your computer screen, then the Microsoft Store version of iTunes is running on your computer.

In this case, you can quickly open the iTunes backup storage:

Press Windows Key + R and then enter the following path: %APPDATA% \ Apple Computer\MobileSync and press Enter.

How to change it?

First, you should rename the current backup folder so that it is not overwritten and only then redirect the iTunes backup storage. To do this, in the original location of the iTunes backup, right-click the "Backup" folder and select "Rename." Next, enter the name Backup.old and press Enter to save it.

Now navigate to another disk partition or external drive and create a new iTunes backup folder. Give it the desired name and transfer the contents of Backup.old to the newly created iTunes backup folder.

Now you need to create a symbolic link (this link is like a shortcut that makes a file or folder look like it really is) to redirect the old iTunes backup storage to the new one.

Tip: create Symlinck

To create a symlink for the desktop version of iTunes, you should do the following:

In the start menu search bar, type command prompt and right-click on the appropriate match and select "Run as administrator". Now and use the following command: mklink / J "E: \ iTunes Backup" "% APPDATA% \ Apple Computer \ MobileSync \ Backup" and press Enter.

This way you have created a shortcut-like symbolic link that points the old iTunes backup folder to the new backup folder.

Now, to make sure everything is done correctly, connect your iPhone or iPad to your Windows PC and take a fresh backup.

Note: to change the iTunes backup folder to a different external drive in the future, you will have to delete the symlink folder and run the command again to create a new symlink by including the new destination path.
