How to change directory in cmd Windows 10, 11?

Here you will find out:

  • how to change directory in cmd Windows 10, 11
  • how DiskInternals software can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

Cd command itself

Command cd or “Change Directory” is a navigation command and helps you change a directory (change folder) on the command line. The “CD\” or “cd” command can move the user to the top of the directory tree (to the root drive), that is, to the C: drive. The command entry can be either “CD” or “cd” because the command line is not case-sensitive. To go to a specific folder using the “CD” command, you must write the name of this folder after “cd” with a backslash (“\”). For example, a user wants to access a folder named “System32” in the Windows folder on the C: drive, and then the command will look like this: “cd\ windows\system32\”.

The user can also return to one folder using the “cd..” command. For this, enter “cd..” in the command line and press “Enter” on the keyboard.

Let's use cd on Windows 10, 11

Changing the command line directory won't be difficult for you if you follow the steps below. Click on the "Start" button and type "Command Prompt" and find it.

Right-click it and select "Run as administrator"; Press "Yes" in the dialog "User account".

Enter the command "dir" in the command line and press the Enter key. This will get you the names of all directories available on your computer.

In this list of directories, select the required folder, then enter the folder name after the "cd" command with a backslash, i.e., "\" After the folder name.

Then the user is again entitled to use the "dir" command to display the contents of the directory.

Also, using the same "cd" command, you can change the directory (enter the "cd" command in front of the directory name and press "Enter").

To return to the root directory, use the "cd /" command.

Let's make it even easier

If you are trying to change to a directory on a different drive, you will not be able to use the cd command. For example, you are in the C:\users\directory and want to change to the E:\docs directory. By running the command cd e:\docs, you will still be in the same folder. To prevent this from happening, you can use the /d option with cd:CD/DE:\docs.

Know! To change the directory and drive at the same time, you need to know what directories are available on your computer. To do this, type "dir" in the command line and press "Enter" on your keyboard. You will get all the directory names in the command window.

If running the /d option with the cd: command doesn't work, you can use the pushd command instead. It is used to combine the "cd" command with the "D:" command.

For example:

"C: Temp> pushd D:\B\A" and press "Enter" on your keyboard.

Where "B" is a directory and "A" is a subfolder in a directory.

To return to the root directory or return to all previously visited folders in reverse order, use the "popd" command as shown below:

"D:\A\B>popd" and press "Enter".
