When a Windows 10 recovery USB drive for another PC may be needed

Windows versions 8 and later have the ability to create a recovery disk using a USB drive.

This is necessary for troubleshooting and restarting the computer when the computer is in a deplorable state. Either a USB stick or a CD or DVD is suitable for these purposes. You can create a Windows 10 recovery USB drive from another computer if your system crashes before you make a recovery drive. However, please understand that you cannot use a Windows 8 recovery drive to recover Windows 10, and vice versa.

How to create a recovery drive

Here are the steps you should take to create a Windows 10 recovery USB drive from another computer.

  1. 1. Connect the USB drive to another computer. In the search box, type "Create recovery drive". In the search results, left-click the required line.
  1. 2. In the Recovery Drive window, check "Back up files to recovery drive" and click "Next".
  1. 3. Select the USB drive connected to your computer with the right mouse and click “Create”.

Now you just need to wait for the completion of this process.

There are times when the computer cannot boot from the recovery disk. In this case, you need to enter BIOS to reset the boot device. to do this, insert the recovery disk into the slot and boot the computer. At this time, enter the BIOS and in the settings select the "Boot" tab. Here, select "change boot order". Now put the appropriate priority over the other drive and press F10.

  1. 4. When you have successfully booted from the recovery drive, select "Troubleshoot". Now click on "Recover from disk". After completing this process, files and applications will be removed, so be prepared for this.

If you get an error message

If you receive an error message during the creation of a Windows 10 recovery disk for another computer, you can try to use the methods that are described below. Perhaps one of them will help you complete the work you started.

Method 1: Check the USB Drive

Look at the connectors and the drive itself; they may already be damaged and cause problems. It also happens that some drives cannot be recognized by Windows. In this case, download the Windows 10 recovery disk ISO file and burn it to a USB drive.

Method 2. Check the Windows Recovery Environment

In Command Prompt, type "reagentc /info" and hit Enter. If you see that the recovery environment is disabled, then fix it with the command: "reagentc /enable".

Method 3. If you can't create a USB disk with included system files.

Then copy the “install.wim” file from the Windows 10 installation file to a folder on your hard drive. For example, the "D:\Windows-OS" folder.

Now, in Command Prompt: enter “Reagentc /setosimage /path D:\Windows-OS-image/index 1” and press Enter. You should now be able to include system files on the recovery drive.

If your computer crashes

Data on the disk can disappear without a trace at any time, be damaged as a result of system failures, or have other problems with the hard disk, including viruses, malware, etc. To feel confident and always prepared, you need a truly effective data recovery application. And that's DiskInternals Partition Recovery, or RAID Recovery if you have an array. If you only lost a few files or folders, you can get by with DiskInternals Uneraser. It is versatile and simple, but has enough power to recover files of any type (music, videos, photos, documents, etc.).

DiskInternals Partition Recovery is for more professional-level situations. It works on every partition of the disk, perfectly converts the file system for maximum recovery of inaccessible files. There are several recovery wizards for you to choose from. Please note that the purchase of a license agreement is not required; you can go through all the recovery stages for free. Only when you are ready to export the recovered files do you need to pay money for a license. A free preview is also offered before that.

DiskInternals RAID Recovery works with any level of RAID recovery. RAID Recovery supports both manual and automatic detection of important parameters such as array type, RAID controller type, stripe size, and disk order. It then recovers files in all possible situations.
